Is a Battery Worth It With Solar?

We get asked a lot whether adding a battery to a solar system is actually worth it.

The honest answer: it depends on what you’re trying to get out of your system. If the main goal is lowering your monthly utility bill, solar alone can usually get you there. It offsets daytime usage and reduces overall dependence on the grid. Where battery storage starts to matter is resilience and energy control.

Without a battery, most solar systems shut off during a grid outage for safety reasons. With a battery, you can keep critical loads running, things like refrigeration, lighting, internet, or other essential power needs.

Batteries also give you more control over when you use your energy. Instead of sending excess solar back to the grid and buying power later in the day or evening, you can store and use more of what you generate. For some projects, that added control and backup capability is the deciding factor. For others, it’s not necessary.

So if you’re already considering solar or have it installed, it’s worth evaluating whether a battery + solar setup aligns with your goals before locking in your system design.
